Eros, c’est la vie. Physical love IS life but who, is Rrose Selavy? And why can’t she sneeze?
Here you can find a readymade reproduction of your work ‘LHOOQ’, to scale. I have attached it to the facade of the painting while, at the same time enclosed it within the space of the painting. The painting itself is a reproduction of your ‘Box in a valise’, a suitcase museum full of hand made reproductions, however my museum has been reproduced with creative license.
In the case of this work Rrose Selavy cannot, touch. But who, is Rrose Selavy? And why can’t she touch? Because it is the art object of course and one must, not, touch. But has not the figure who graffitied on this display already done so? When she wrote in pink font:
‘why
not
touch
Rrose
Selavy’
Well yes, and perhaps it is a taunt. But perhaps, perhaps, she IS Rrose Selavy and she is simply asking why not touch? Or maybe she asks you, my Dear Marcel, why not touch Rrose Selavy? And why can’t you touch Rrose, Marcel Duchamp? After all physical love is life and her name IS ‘Rrose Selvay’. Does she, like the art object, say no? Desire unfulfilled is sweeter than any sneeze, no?
Why did she do this specifically to the reproduction of ‘LHOOQ’, who sits there with a smile having had her beard and moustache freshly shaven off? Perhaps she saw a kindred soul in that figure of a man, turned woman once more.
Sincerely yours,
