This is followed by a process of transposing elements of the resulting drawing into metal fragments using a pencil and magnets to hand-shape lengths of wire over the lines of a particular composition or form. After creating the cyanotype, the lengths of fine wire are cut up into hundreds of minute fragments and become the material for one of the constellations works. Each cyanotype in the constellations series therefore marks an ethereal end-point within the continuous process of fragmentation at the centre of Tom's practice.
constellations (in a cloud, in a wall, in a chair) specifically contains the shadows of the fragments of wire used to create cyanotypes within the ongoing chair series and the title is a reference to a line from Clara Porset's 1952 catalogue essay for ‘Art in Daily Life’: ‘There is design in everything … in a cloud, in a wall, in a chair, in the sea, in the sand, in a pot.”
