A contemporary ceramics quarter within the Museum.
In ancient Athens, the Kerameikos was the potter’s quarter, a hub of innovation where artisans produced some of the most sought-after ceramics of the Mediterranean region. 'Kerameikos' brings together seven leading Australian ceramic artists to create a contemporary potters' quarter at the Chau Chak Wing Museum.
Each artist was invited to explore the Museum’s historic and diverse collections during a week-long intensive residency, collaborating closely with the curatorial team. The resulting commissioned works provide a fresh perspective on some of Australia's oldest collections.
'During the Art Lab period, I had two realisations: Firstly, the museum's collection of objects serves to preserve past stories. Secondly, I found great enjoyment in the friendships forged with fellow artists in the project.
Drawing from these insights, I created Echoes of Friendship, an installation mirroring my personal museum storage space. It centres around the theme of connections and camaraderie.
The installation showcases works from my personal archive that tell stories of friendships I cultivated along my artistic journeys. Additionally, I introduce new pieces created for this project, including golden cat masks, miniature artist figurines, and small characters inspired by the museum's artefacts.'
