N.Smith Gallery is delighted to announce the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia has acquired James Tylor's entire series Te Moana Nui: Navigating Time & Space.
Te Moana Nui is a series of 9 daguerreotypes that draw upon James' Māori heritage to navigate through the cultural history of the Pacific Ocean. Exploring migration, war, and trade, the series reflects upon cultural changes that have taken place in the Pacific region since colonisation.
This significant acquisition joins recent accessions by UNSW Collection and Latrobe Regional Gallery, and inclusion in The 4th National Indigenous Art Triennial: Ceremony, National Gallery of Australia; Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art: Free/State, Art Gallery of South Australia; and a solo exhibition touring throughout the United States of America.
