Works by a talented young artist in City of Logan, Kyra Mancketelow from Crestmead, will be showcased at the Logan Art Gallery from next week.
Her works, titled Unsilenced, will be on display at the gallery from June 11 to July 24, which overlaps with NAIDOC Week from July 4 to 11.
The artworks, which include prints, sculptures, ceramics, paintings and weavings, are part of the first major solo exhibition by Kyra Mancktelow (Quandamooka, Mardigan, South Sea Islander).
“I’m excited to have my first solo at the Logan Art Gallery, where I was born and raised,” Kyra said.
The 24-year-old artist said it was a great opportunity to showcase her work with the community, her family, mob, and friends.
“It gives me a platform to voice and to share these histories in a way that other people may not be able to see.”
“It gives people an opportunity to look and reflect, and take what they want with that.”
Kyra’s passion for art began when she was young, and was inspired by her culture, her people, and their histories.
She is currently completing the Contemporary Indigenous Art Program at the Queensland College of Art and will complete the Honours program this year.
Kyra also designed the stunning mural on the Chester Park water reservoir on Middle Rd at Boronia Heights.
The artworks explain how Kyra and other First Nations people view the world through distinct ways of life such as land, law and ceremony.
This project is supported by the Regional Arts Development Fund, a partnership between the Queensland Government and Logan City Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.
To also mark NAIDOC Week, this round includes Elders’ choice: highlights from the Logan Art Collection exhibition.
Representatives from the Logan District Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation for Elders have curated a selection of local artworks from the Logan Art Collection.
